OZ wing replacement on the Evo

OZ wing replacement on the Evo

The controversial wing of the Lancer Evo is actually functional. However it attracts the wrong attention from cops, other cars who want to race, and other drivers (thanks to the ricers). I want to be able to drive around and be a sleeper, incognito when I park on the mall, or when I get pulled over.

So I order the OZ Lancer wing and attempt to install. Many thanks to my friend Bojan who helped me get this done in about 3+ hours most of which was removing the darn adhesive, retrieving a screw that fell in the cracks, and getting stuff we need from my house. If we had to do it again and was prepared, it'd only take an hour.

from spoilerdepot.com, it arrives 8 days later.

prepainted in Rally Red color..

First open up the trunk.
DSC00573.JPG (82046 bytes)

There will be 4 places to unscrew.
DSC00572.JPG (75653 bytes)

Take off the rubber plugs. The top bigger one just unscrews.
DSC00575.JPG (49341 bytes)

The smaller bottom plug you can just pull off.
DSC00577.JPG (56219 bytes)

The size is 10mm so find the tool that you like best and start unscrewing.
DSC00578.JPG (53892 bytes)

Be careful with the screw on top coz it might fall inside the crevices of the trunk.
If you have a magnet tool shown here.. use it.

DSC00580.JPG (125144 bytes)

Easy does it.. one screw fell on us and took us forever to get out. We had to use an air gun to blow it out.
DSC00581.JPG (68478 bytes)

After you unscrew it, it is still held in place by a strong adhesive which you can sort of see
between the spoiler and the trunk.
DSC00579.JPG (51248 bytes)

Be careful not to scratch the Carbon Fiber, the paint, when you use a sharp razor or
something thin to slice off some of the adhesive.
DSC00582.JPG (91263 bytes)

Take your time cutting off, little by little and gently pushing up to get the wing to loosen up.
DSC00583.JPG (58609 bytes)

Eventually it will come off, be careful that you pull straight up so you don't break the
plastic plug that holds it also along with the screws.
DSC00584.JPG (68290 bytes)

Use a hairdryer to soften and loosen the adhesive. Just clean out the inside strip since that is
what will show. The stock wing has a wider base and covers it up. The new OZ wing is thinner and
so this strip will need to be removed.
DSC00594.JPG (67976 bytes)

The car looks naked without the wing.
DSC00586.JPG (74704 bytes)

Compare the stock Carbon Fiber wing with the OZ Lancer Wing, what a size difference.
DSC00587.JPG (73245 bytes)

A look at the stock CF wing showing the underside.
DSC00590.JPG (85155 bytes)

This wing is indeed a beauty. Too bad it has a bad stigma.
DSC00591.JPG (61423 bytes)

I'll probably put it back on when I go to the track.
DSC00592.JPG (55446 bytes)

There was one mistake though, the spoiler that has the wires on THE WRONG END for the Evo.
The hold for the wiring is on the right side of the trunk for the Evo. Perhaps on the regular Lancer it's
on the left.
DSC00588.JPG (49650 bytes)

Here is the wiring hole that is covered, on the right side. Since the wing comes with wiring on the left,
We'd have to drill.
DSC00589.JPG (53886 bytes)

Here's my BFG.. err..Drill.
DSC00593.JPG (70977 bytes)

Mark off the spot (matching it to the hole on the right), and begin drilling.
Use a cloth for extra protection from chips or whatever

DSC00595.JPG (76668 bytes)

We need a bigger hole for the wires..
DSC00596.JPG (41468 bytes)

Bigger and longer ;-)
DSC00600.JPG (69849 bytes)

Perfect size hole.
DSC00601.JPG (45087 bytes)

Use a light tool with a dentist like mirror tool to check out the hole. If you are ok with it from the
other side, you can put the drill away.
DSC00597.JPG (54323 bytes)

Slowly put the wires in, and pull from the back.
DSC00602.JPG (43805 bytes)

You can also start putting in the adhesive pad strips on strategic parts of the wing.
DSC00603.JPG (43156 bytes)

Note that for the middle bar I didn't drill on the trunk so I can return it in stock form with no holes.
The pads will prevent rubbing against the bare trunk and scratching it.
DSC00604.JPG (42693 bytes)

Finish up the rest.
DSC00605.JPG (65325 bytes)

Carefully start screwing the 4 screws. The old screws won't fit the new wing, so save them for the stock
configuration. The new wing comes with smaller screws which will do fine.
DSC00606.JPG (58647 bytes)

After you finish, wiring will be what's left. The OZ wing comes with a brake light. So the one in your back
window will need to be turned off (you can't have both by law). Here is a pic of the brake light disconnected
with the connector hanging out.
DSC00598.JPG (91225 bytes)

Run the wires through the crevices, making it neat and out of the way.
DSC00599.JPG (55913 bytes)

The wires will need a connector.
DSC00611.JPG (62701 bytes)

Using the brake light connector as a donor, cut the wires and use it for the wing.
DSC00607.JPG (48766 bytes)

This you can now connect with.
DSC00612.JPG (56488 bytes)

The wing comes with wire clips which you can use to neatly tuck away the wires.
DSC00613.JPG (64429 bytes)

Nice clean install, the wing is a lot smaller and more discreet.
DSC00614.JPG (63026 bytes)

Funny the stock CF wing doesn't look stock.. people think I added it. This looks stock.
DSC00615.JPG (68024 bytes)

A comparison of the stock wing same view and you notice the difference.
