NFL-style Starcraft 2 season tournament!

Here's when the idea was conceived, as well as discussions of rules.

Schedule/Results/Replays:

STANDINGS 1 2 3 4 5 6

Here's the final rules:

1. SC2 player - NFL team

Each player will play as an NFL team they choose. Whoever that team plays for the week, will play the corresponding player. For example, 0D1N who represents the Patriots, plays the Dolphins on week 1, represented by kaffinejo.

2. Homefield Advantage - map choice

Pats is at Dolphins, so kaffinejo has home field advantage meaning kaffinejo gets to choose the map (standard Blizzard map or IPL/GSL pro map). These 2 players will need to coordinate when to play their game, as long as it is played during week 1.

3. No opponent?

If an NFL team with an SC2 player associated with it is matched up with an NFL team with no SC2 player.. then the SC2 player will have to play a ladder game.

The player MUST post on the thread that they are about to play their ladder game. Then after that, upload the replay to this site's replay uploader.

The game will count towards the NFL-style standings, win or lose.

4. 2 NFL teams playing each other but no SC2 player?

Then the actual result of the NFL game will be used to determine winner.

5. Handicaps?

We have several different leagues here as far as skill.. from Bronze to Diamond. So to make it fair we *might* do handicaps after week 8.

But let's wait and see how things play out. So weeks 1-8 will be as is. If NO team has any upsets, then we WILL do handicaps based on level difference between the 2 SC2 players:

1 level = no handicap
2 levels = 90 (Bronze vs Silver, Gold vs Diamond, etc)
3 levels = 80 (Bronze vs Platinum, Diamond vs Silver)
4 levels = 70 (Bronze vs Diamond)

6. Late/missed game?

Email me I might make exceptions as long as you let me know. Otherwise, if you don't play your game you will get the loss. I would need to hear who tried to schedule and who couldn't.

SVN - dealing with trunks, branching, making releases, merging, etc

Since I'm new to Subversion (SVN), and command line calls, here's some sample commands and good practice to branch off a trunk, make changes, merge (dry run), merge, then test, then commit.

For good site on SVN basics: http://svnbook.red-bean.com/nightly/en/index.html

  • app.karljay.com/svn - SVN host url
  • myapp - my application

copy myapp trunk to branch ABC-123:

    svn cp https://app.karljay.com/svn/myapp/trunk https://app.karljay.com/svn/myapp/branches/ABC-123 -m "ABC-123 Branching off trunk"

You can then work on the branch "ABC-123".

After you're done, you'll need the revision number.

So to get branch on your copy:

    svn log --stop-on-copy
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    r18132 | kgarcia | 2009-03-24 14:53:10 +0000 (Tue, 24 Mar 2009) | 1 line

ABC-123 - add this enhancement, and fix other bugs
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    [kgarcia@karljay.com ABC-123]$ pwd
    /home/kgarcia/www/karljay.com/ABC-123

To make a release branch "2009-04", copy trunk to branch:

[kgarcia@karljay.com karljay.com]$ svn cp https://app.karljay.com/svn/myapp/trunk https://app.karljay.com/svn/myapp/branches/2009-04 -m "Branching off trunk for the April 2009 release"

    Committed revision 18239.

After you're done and ready to merge back (to main trunk, or release), do a dry-run. This won't merge, but good to get statuses of files like U for updated, A for added, and C for conflict, which is what you'll watch out for.

If you don't see any conflicts, great. So run the merge to merge the branch you want to merge INTO the checked out copy

    [kgarcia@karljay.com 2009-04]$ pwd
    /home/kgarcia/www/karljay.com/2009-04
    [kgarcia@karljay.com 2009-04]$ svn merge --dry-run -r18132:HEAD https://app/svn/myapp/branches/ABC-123

    A home/webmetrics_banner.php
    U home/dsp_home.php
    A images/kj_banner.gif
    U order/secondary/act_step5.php
    U order/karljay/act_step5.php
    U zone/dsp_zonelist.php

When ready, remove the --dry-run to do the real thing.

After testing it is good, commit:

    [kgarcia@karljay.com 2009-04]$ svn commit -m "ABC-123 Merged to April 2009 release branch"
    Sending home/webmetrics_banner.php
    Sending home/dsp_home.php
    Sending images/kj_banner.gif
    Sending order/secondary/act_step5.php
    Sending order/karljay/act_step5.php
    Sending zone/dsp_zonelist.php
    Transmitting file data ......
    Committed revision 18240.

    chess layout adjustments

Chess has now been layed out a bit better to maximize space usage, and put items in proper locations:

    1. captured pieces are bottom right, and minimized since it is not often referred to
    2. PGN is top right, but is not as high. To compensate, there is a scrolling bar, and the list is scrolled to the bottom automatically to show the last move.
    3. messages are moved to be more visible, and is available with a scroll bar as well.
    4. the chess board is smaller to let others have more room.

As you can see, things are squeezed more together, but is still a bit big for our normal page layout. Stay tuned for more adjustments as we play with improving the site!

    Webchess is now ready!

The interface is still being modified, and the site is being redesigned. But the new webchess software is active and ready.
